At this point, I would not think you need to be overly concerned about tone color, if you are like most beginning players (even though you are experienced as a musician), you have your hands full working on the many other aspects of playing a brass instrument.I play mostly jazz and blues and Im doing well and hoping to eventually start earning my main income from it toward the start-middle of next year.I have little interest in classical playing (other than perhaps for sheer experimentation),and I love what has been referred to for a while as the Committee sound.I say jazz trumpet Im talking lead horn, not as a part of a section).
Trumpet Herald Forum Full Working OnI guess it would be easiest to ask if you have had any prior experience in playing the trumpet. ![]() Some good suggestions would be the olds ambassador or a king 600, but there are plenty of others. Its not very good to just buy horns based on recommendations that you read on a forum. I only suggested a couple of beginner horns to start out on because you wouldnt know what to look for in a horn if youve never played. On the other hand, I have heard some impressive things from carolbrass horns. They are reasonably priced as well, unlike some of the big manufacturers. If you are mainly interested in playing for jazz, I would also take a look at some schilkes. ![]() ![]() I have had bad experiences with horns that were bought for me but I had not tested. You could have a lip strong enough to lift that piano and still not be able to play a low C. For a beginner, if the horn is worn due to years of use, trying to overcome their limitations is a waste of time. You will get better advice than you will on a forum where you dont have any idea of the abilities of the person giving you advice. You could have the actual horn that Miles or Chet played on and theres no way youre going to sound remotely similar to those guys. But itd be best to have a more experienced player or teacher in tow to help make sure you dont get a lemon. Im an engineer, which means I think I know a whole bunch of stuff I really dont. So forget picking up some old beater of a horn that you would give to an eleven year old beginner. Youre going to suck for a while, but you already know this Lol. By that time, youll begin to figure out exactly what you want in your horn.
